Warm, Welcoming, and On-Site: Team Headshots for Alair Homes
Not all professional headshots need a studio. In fact, some of the best ones don’t. That was the case for my recent shoot with Alair Homes, a remodeling company based in Draper, Utah. Specializing in kitchen, bathroom, and home renovations, their team wanted updated headshots to feature on their website—especially as one of their remodels was being showcased in the Parade of Homes. With increased traffic expected to hit their site, their goal was clear: fresh, inviting, and up-to-date team photos that felt personal and professional.
Creating a Cozy Vibe—In Their Own Office
Rather than take the team into a studio, I packed up my gear and brought the setup to them. The owner had me stop by a few days beforehand to scout their Draper office, which helped us plan the most effective setup. We landed on a cozy corner in their front room with wood paneling and a dark couch—a setting that naturally felt warm, relaxed, and lived-in.
Each employee sat on the edge of the couch, arm resting casually over the side, smiling directly at the camera. The idea was to create an approachable, "hey, I'm sitting in the room with you" feel. And with that beautiful natural texture in the background, the headshots felt far more connected to their brand than any studio backdrop could provide.
Working with What You Have (and Making It Work)
While the room was a bit tight, I moved around a few things and brought lighting that could adapt to the environment. I used a two-light setup with modifiers to soften the shadows and highlight facial features while keeping everything looking natural.
Their whole team wore matching black polo shirts embroidered with the Alair Homes logo, paired with jeans or neutral pants. It struck a balance between uniformity and comfort—adding a subtle branding touch without being too formal.
Group Photos and On-Site Adaptability
After the individual shots, I photographed the team together against a clean white wall. Matching the lighting to the headshots taken earlier was a little tricky, but thanks to the small group size and my mobile gear, we were able to maintain consistency in tone and brightness.
The employees appreciated how seamless the process felt. For some, it was their first professional headshot, and several mentioned how comfortable and easy the session was. That’s always the goal: making people feel at ease in front of the camera, especially when the shoot is happening in their daily work environment.
Why On-Site Headshots Work
Studio sessions definitely have their place, but there's something special about photographing a team in their own space. For Alair Homes, it added authenticity and familiarity. Clients browsing their site don’t just see polished portraits—they get a glimpse of the environment and the personality behind the business.
For companies who pride themselves on approachability, comfort, and being hands-on with their clients, on-location headshots send the right message. It also saves the team time—no need to travel to a studio, coordinate parking, or break up the workday too much.
Preparing the Team for Success
To help everything run smoothly, I always send clients a prep email ahead of time. It includes tips on what to wear, how to handle makeup or shaving, reminders to clean faces, brush teeth, and ditch any chewing gum. These small things go a long way in making the photos clean, sharp, and professional.
Final Thoughts
The owner was thrilled with the results, and the new photos are now helping tell their story online in a way that feels both warm and trustworthy. This kind of shoot reminds me why flexibility matters so much in headshot photography. It’s not just about the lighting and lenses—it’s about creating an environment where people feel like themselves, and letting that come through in the photo.
If you're looking for something that fits your team's vibe, I'm always happy to come to you. Whether you're based in Draper, the greater Salt Lake area, or beyond, I bring the same level of attention and quality to every location session.
